Open Tibia is an open source form or alternative of the proprietary and commercial game Tibia by Cipsoft.

Open Tibia development started out with the development of the first and primary Open Tibia Server project OTServ. Later on TFS, a fork of OTServ, would replace it as the original community website for Open Tibia OTFans.net was abandoned around 2007-2008 for OTLand.net.

There has been speculations and allegations that OTFans was abandoned due to DDoS attacks from OTLand, although it is much more likely due to development inactivity of the OTServ project[1][2]. At the time the popularity of OTServ was in heavy decline, while TFS was growing rapidly. Since OTLand.net was the official support forum for TFS, they eventually took over the community. Both OTFans and OTLand has been under lots of DDoS attacks, probably by different people over the years.

In order to save OTFans.net and their historic data, OTLand.net has donated money to them so they could keep up their servers[2], but as they kept declining and getting less and less self sustained it was a fruitless effort. Only a couple people now holds the archived database of OTFans, one of them being STiX.

Since then a lot of alternative servers and software has been developed, though TFS is still the most popular server software in use to this day.

  1. Do you know who was responsible for the DDOS attacks on otland and otfans when you first made otland? 'Talaturen: I think both sites have been under attack multiple times by different people, I don’t think it has been the same person attacking either site everytime.
  2. 2.0 2.1 Talaturen: I don’t hate OTFans and I don’t want it to die (I even donated a significant amount to OTFans compared to what they normally get from donations a few months ago because I want it to stay online) but I don’t see them putting effort into keeping it alive. Restructuring the forum or whatever they are up to right now is definitely not going to help, their staff needs to get involved in OpenTibia. Zisly seems to be their only staff member who has realized that.
